Hendrik van Heessel (d. 1470), the author of this manuscript, was a herald in the service of several German emperors and also Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. During his years at the colourful courts of Europe, he made notes in this notebook, in Latin, German and Middle Dutch. In the summer of 1456 he supplemented his notes with several strikingly drawn portraits of the Counts of Holland. One of those we can recognise is Jacqueline. The wooden sculptures of the counts at the Binnenhof in The Hague, now lost, were probably the inspiration for this intriguing look at several of the protagonists of 15th-century Western Europe.
